The Maryland Terrapins got off to a bad start this season, which led to the firing of head coach Mark Turgeon in November. Turgeon wasn't terrible at Maryland, but he also wasn't great. For a program which won the 2002 national championship and made the 2001 Final Four plus some other deep runs in the NCAA Tournament under legendary coach Gary Williams, the expected standard was — and is — supposed to be higher than what Turgeon delivered. When formulating a Maryland Michigan State pick, you need to know that when Gary Williams coached Maryland, the program was nicknamed “Garyland,” in honor of the coach who carried the Terps to the top of the college basketball world. The 2002 team was recently honored on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its national title, a reminder of what the program used to be. Maryland has had a very inconsistent season under interim coach Danny Manning, and everyone is waiting to see who the next permanent head coach will be.
It should be said that when you make a Maryland Michigan State prediction, don't completely dismiss the Terps' chances here. They have played better the past few weeks. Their only losses since Feb. 10 have been a one-point loss at Purdue and a road loss at Indiana. They have won all their subsequent home games since getting blown out by Iowa in College Park. This game, of course, is on the road, but Maryland has been better the past four weeks.
Michigan State has been all over the place this season. The Spartans will make the NCAA Tournament, but coach Tom Izzo has not been happy with his team's performance, and he has to be wondering why he doesn't have better leadership and better responses to adversity on his roster. Michigan State is talented enough to beat Purdue — which it did over a week ago — and bad enough to get demolished by Michigan and Ohio State, which followed the Purdue win. Michigan State limps into this game, hoping a Senior Day crowd in the Breslin Center will give this team a needed lift before the Big Ten Tournament.

The Spartans are not a very consistent team, but that means that after consecutive bad losses to Michigan and Ohio State — bad losses not because of the caliber of opposition, but because of how minimally competitive MSU was — Michigan State will put together a good performance.
