Villanova spent much of the season looking like a non-contender for the Final Four and the national championship. Coach Jay Wright is one of the best coaches in the country. He has the multiple national titles to prove it. He was expected to take this team to the top of the sport, but through January, Villanova didn't look the part of a major threat to the other elite teams in college basketball. However, February has provided signs that Villanova could be about to turn the corner. When thinking about a Villanova UConn prediction, it's important to realize that Villanova answered every challenge from Providence in what was generally regarded as the Big East game of the year. The Wildcats won on the road in front of a raucous Providence crowd, making the kind of statement college basketball watchers had been waiting for.
Collin Gillespie, who returned for this season in the pursuit of a national title, was injured last season during the NCAA Tournament. He was unable to play eventual national champion Baylor when the Wildcats lost to the Bears in the Sweet 16. Gillespie was supposed to be the key piece which put this team over the top. Against Providence, he hit the big pressure shots which carried the Wildcats to victory. If he plays like that for the rest of the season, Villanova becomes a Final Four contender.
UConn has played better the past few weeks after struggling for much of the season. The wins UConn collected in January were against the lower half of the Big East, and the Huskies needed to show that they were capable of beating the top end of the conference. They have begun to do that in February. They beat Marquette, they beat Seton Hall, and they most recently beat Xavier on Saturday. This team has answered the challenge and has solidified itself as an NCAA Tournament team for 2022. Keep that in mind when making a Villanova UConn pick.
