The New Jersey Devils travel north of the border as they visit the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night. This game will continue our NHL odds series as we hand out a Devils-Canadiens prediction and pick. We will also let you know how to watch the game.
The Devils have started the season with five points in their first four games. Jack Hughes has been their best player through the first four games. He has four goals to go along with six assists, so he has been a part of 10 of the Devils' 15 total goals. Jesper Bratt, and Dougie Hamilton are having a good year, as well. The Devils are coming off an overtime win against the New York Islanders, and that ended their two game losing streak.
The Canadiens are 3-1-1 to begin the season. Cole Caufield, Tanner Pearson, and Alex Newhook each have three goals to lead the team. Sean Monahan, and Nick Suzuki have collected three assists each to lead the team in that category. As a team, the Canadiens goaltending has been decent. They allow just 3.00 goals per game.
Vitek Vanecek is expected to be in goal for the Devils. Samuel Montembeault should be the starting goalie for the Canadiens.

Why The Devils Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Devils have been giving up their fair share of goals, so they will need to be good in the offensive zone. Overall, the Devils are good with the puck. They score 3.75 goals per game, and that is thanks to what Jack Hughes has been doing all season. Hughes is a big part of the Devils' attack, so he does need to have a big game if New Jersey wants to win.
The good news is New Jersey will get their shots off. They average 34.0 per game while the Canadiens allow 35.4 shots per game. As of right now, the Canadiens do play well in net, and in the defensive zone, but that is going to be hard to keep up. Allowing 35 shots per game is only sustainable for so long. If the Devils get that amount of pucks on net, I would expect around four of them to go in.
Why The Canadiens Will Cover The Spread/Win
As mentioned, the Devils give up some goals. 3.50 per game to be exact. The Canadiens score 3.20 per game, but they do not take too many shots. They average less than 30 shots per game, and their powerplay goal percentage is just 15 percent. However, the Canadiens are top-10 in shot percentage in the NHL. When they take shots, they will make them at a big enough rate to be successful. All Montreal has to do is take their shots. The Devils allow more than 30 per game, so the Canadiens should have a good chance to put puck on net. If they do that, I think they can score a good amount of goals in this game.
Final Devils-Canadiens Prediction & Pick
I have a feeling both teams in this game will score at least three goals. It would not be surprising to see even five or six goals scored by one of the teams. As for the winner, I am going to take the Canadiens to cover the spread because they are the underdogs.
Final Devils-Canadiens Prediction & Pick: Canadiens +1.5 (-118), Over 6.5 (-120)
