Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mariners have been red-hot recently and have a 35-27 record. They have won four straight heading into this game. The Mariners have struggled behind the plate this season, but their pitching staff is a top-10 unit in the MLB. Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, Mitch Haniger, Jorge Polanco, Ty France, and Mitch Garver are standouts for the offense despite their struggles. Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, and Bryce Miller have all been at varying levels of great for the Mariners on the mound and carried them when needed.

The Mariners are starting Bryan Woo on the mound where he has a 2-0 record, a 1.30 ERA, and a 0.58 WHIP. Through 27.2 innings, he has allowed four runs on 14 hits with two walks and 18 strikeouts. In his five starts this season, the Mariners are undefeated at 5-0. He also has a current K/BB ratio of 9.0. Woo has been great in a limited capacity for the Mariners this season and he gets a very favorable matchup against a struggling Athletics offense behind the plate.

The Mariners have talent on offense, but they have struggled and can not find any consistency on offense. They are 29th in batting average at .223 after finishing last season at .242. Julio Rodriguez, Cal Raleigh, and Ty France lead the Mariners in most batting categories. Rodriguez leads the way in batting average at .266 and in total hits at 66. Raleigh then leads in home runs at 11 and in RBI at 33. This offense has a tougher-than-expected matchup against JP Sears on the mound for the Athletics, who has been a bright spot despite their struggles as a team.

Why The Athletics Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Athletics are one of the worst teams in the league this season at 24-38 record. They have lost five of their last six games and two straight heading into this matchup. The Athletics have struggled behind the plate and their pitching has not been that much better. JJ Bleday, Abraham Toro, Shea Langeliers, and Brent Rooker have stood out on a struggling offense. On the mound, Paul Blackburn and JP Sears have been decent for the Athletics despite the staff struggling. The Athletics are not the disaster they were last season, but that is not saying much.

The Athletics are starting JP Sears on the mound and he has a 4-4 record, a 4.01 ERA, and a 1.11 WHIP. He has allowed 31 runs on 56 hits with 19 walks and 45 strikeouts through 67.1 innings. Sears has been a bright spot despite all of the struggles and outside factors plaguing the Athletics. The Mariners have talent, but Sears gets a favorable matchup against their offense because they have struggled so much this season.

The offense for the Athletics has been nothing special either and one of the worst in the MLB. They are 28th in the MLB in team batting average at .224 after having a team batting average of .223 one year ago. Abraham Toro and Brent Rooker lead the team in most batting categories. Rooker leads the way in batting average at .279, in home runs at 12, in RBI at 39, and in OBP at .368. Abraham Toro then leads the way in total hits at 62. This is a difficult matchup for their offense because Woo has been so good in a limited capacity this season on the mound.

Final Mariners-Athletics Prediction & Pick

This is going to be a pitching duel between Sears and Woo. Both offenses have struggled so much ranking near the bottom of the league, even with both of them still having talent. JP Sears is the key and should help the Athletics cover in this game at home, even if the Mariners still win it will be very close.
