The Mets make the trip to Washington D.C. to face the Nationals! Both of these two teams are not playing well. The Mets have been one of the worst teams in the MLB, while the Nationals have had their fair share of struggles with consistency as well. Our MLB odds series has our Mets-Nationals prediction, odds, and pick for Tuesday.

The Mets had a complete makeover from last year to this year. They are 24-35 this season and are 2-5 in their last seven games after splitting their last series against the Diamondbacks. Their bats and pitching have struggled this season. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo have been solid behind the plate despite their struggles across the board. Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Jose Butto have been solid despite the staff struggling as a whole. The Mets have struggled this season across the board. They have been one of the worst teams in the MLB this season but they get a decent matchup against the Nationals with how inconsistent they have been.

The Nationals have been extremely inconsistent this season. They sit with a 27-31 record and have gone 3-2 in their last five games. Their pitching has been very good and is just outside the top 10, while they have struggled behind the plate on offense. Jesse Winker, CJ Abrams, Joey Meneses, and Luis Garcia Jr. have stood out for an average offense this season in the capital. Trevor Williams, MacKenzie Gore, and Jake Irvin have all been solid up to this point for the staff and have carried the team on the mound this season. The Nationals have talent, but it has been difficult to put it all together this season which makes this an interesting matchup against the Mets.

Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mets are starting David Peterson on the mound and after just one start he has a 0-0 record, a 3.60 ERA, and a 1.60 WHIP. The Mets lost the game, and he pitched five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Peterson is still trying to come back from hip surgery where he was supposed to be out for up to seven months. Peterson struggled in his first game back but gets a good chance to try and bounce back in this game against the Nationals who have struggled behind the plate.

The Mets have struggled behind the plate. They have a .236 batting average and then they had a .238 batting average last season. Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, and Brandon Nimmo led the way in most batting categories this season. Marte leads the way in batting average at .267 and in total hits at 54. Nimmo leads the way in RBI at 31 and then in OBP at .344. Alonso is then the leader in home runs at 13. This will be a tough matchup against Trevor Williams because he has been the best pitcher for the Mets this season on the mound.

Why The Nationals Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Nationals are starting Trevor Williams on the mound in this game and he has a 5-0 record, a 2.22 ERA, and a 1.08 WHIP. Through 56.2 innings, Williams has allowed 16 runs on 45 hits with 16 walks and 47 strikeouts. The Nationals are 9-2 in the 11 games that he's started this season. In his last start, he pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a Nationals win. Williams has been the ace for the Nationals this season and he gets a favorable matchup against a struggling Mets team behind the plate.

The offense for the Nationals has struggled this season. They are 24th in the MLB in team batting average at .230 after having a team batting average of .254 one season ago. Luis Garcia Jr., CJ Abrams, Joey Meneses, and Jesse Winker stand out and lead the way in most of the batting categories. Abrams leads the way in home runs at nine and then in total hits at 54. Garcia Jr. then leads in batting average at .273, Meneses leads in RBI at 29, and Winker leads the way in OBP at .342. The Nationals have struggled behind the plate and this matchup does them no favors against an ace like Williams with how well he has played this season.

Final Mets-Nationals Prediction & Pick

The deciding factor in this game is on the mound. David Peterson is rusty in just his second start, while the Nationals are starting their ace in Trevor Williams and he has been a massive key for them having success on the mound. Neither offense has been able to find any momentum, and because of that, it becomes a pitching duel. Go with the Nationals to win and cover in this game at home.
