Why The Giants Could Win
Anthony DeSclafani holds a rather lackluster 5.06 ERA in three August appearances. But here's an interesting stat that might just give the Giants and edge in this game. As a west coast team, the Giants don't play in the Eastern Time Zone often. But the last time DeSclafani pitched in EST, as he will on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, he threw a gem – one of the best games of not only his season, but one of the best pitched games in all of baseball this season. On June 11 in Washington D.C., The Giants RHP threw a nine-inning complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters. I'm not saying he will necessarily throw a complete game shutout again, but against a Braves lineup that was just shut out by the Giants yesterday, DeSclafani has the potential to throw a gem today. Additionally, in two May starts in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati (also EST), DeSclafani threw a total of 12.0 innings, allowing just one run between those two starts.
Why The Braves Could Win
Ian Anderson, the Braves starter on Sunday, has not pitched since July 11. So his stats more or less get thrown out the window here, since there's no recent numbers of relevancy for this prediction. But the Braves could win because of Anderson's excellence earlier in the season. In eight of his 18 starts this season, Anderson has allowed one run or fewer. Now off the injured list and rejoining a Braves run in the thick of the pennant chase, Anderson should look more like his April-self (2.48 ERA) than his June/July numbers (3.95 ERA). If Anderson can put together four or five innings of one run or less, the Braves dynamic offense and lockdown bullpen should have no issue finishing this game off to lead the Braves to victory.
Final Giants-Braves Prediction & Pick
The Giants may have lost in epic fashion in the first game of this series, but they took back the momentum with last night's 5-0 shutout win. Given DeSclafani's track record of success on the east coast, Anderson's recent injury, and the Giants offense slightly outweighing the Braves, I like the Giants to win here, 5-1.
