The San Francisco Giants take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Check out our MLB odds series for our Giants Diamondbacks prediction and pick.
Alex Cobb takes the bump for the Giants, while Merrill Kelly goes to the mound for the Diamondbacks.
Alex Cobb has a 4.59 ERA. On May 29, he had a 5.73 ERA and then missed three weeks with an injury. He returned to the Giants' rotation on June 19 against the Pirates. In his three starts since the return from his injury, he has pitched only 13 1/3 innings, and he has not gone more than five innings in any of his starts. However, in those 13 1/3 innings, Cobb has allowed only two earned runs. He has shaved 1.14 runs off his ERA after coming back to the team, but the sample size is very small. Moreover, his three outings have been against the Pirates, Reds, and White Sox, three teams with losing records. Cobb has to do a lot more to prove that he is a different and improved pitcher, but recent starts have moved the ball in the right direction.
Merrill Kelly has a 3.46 ERA. He was spectacular in April, notching a 1.27 ERA when the D-Backs surprised everyone in Major League Baseball with a hot start. In May, he came down to earth and posted a 6.31 ERA. In June, he stabilized, registering a 3.60 ERA. On July 1, in his most recent start, he went into Coors Field and shut down the Rockies. He allowed only one earned run in seven innings in Denver, arguably the toughest place to pitch in the big leagues. Kelly has been a definite strong spot in the Arizona rotation and for the D-Backs in general. The team has to love the fact that after he went through a rough patch, he was able to get out of it and rediscover a higher level of performance.

Why The Giants Could Cover the Spread
The Giants have lost six in a row and 12 of 15. They are in a genuine tailspin. It defies the MLB odds to think that the Giants are going to continue to plummet. A team this experienced and mature, which was the best in baseball in the 2021 regular season, has too much pride and expertise to continue playing bad baseball. Moreover, the Giants are trying to avoid a sweep loss against the Diamondbacks after being swept by the White Sox. The odds of the Giants getting swept in two straight series by two losing teams are very low. Alex Cobb has been better since he returned to the rotation. The Giants' bats are due for a good game. That adds up to a San Francisco win.
Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover the Spread
After beating the Giants twice, the D-Backs will try to do it thrice. They're certainly a newly confident team after finding their hitting shoes this past weekend in Coors Field. The D-Backs are scoring five or more runs with great consistency, going back to last Friday. They're in a groove, and Alex Cobb is not the elite stopper who will shut them down. Merrill Kelly is a better pitcher than Cobb and will carry this one home for Arizona.
Final Giants-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick
The Giants are bound to snap their streak, but the D-Backs have the better pitcher. You should stay away from this game, but if you want to make a pick, take the Giants.
Final Giants-Diamondbacks Prediction & Pick: Giants -1.5
