Why The Bulls Could Cover The Spread
The Chicago Bulls have been on a weird downturn lately. Chicago started this year off as one of the top competitors in the league. They came out on top against the toughest teams and earned the respect of the NBA. However, after the break, they have seemingly taken some steps in the wrong direction. They still have a solid record of 39-26, but are coming off five straight losses. Their most recent defeat came against the Philadelphia 76ers by 15. They have been facing tough competition, but they should have been able to win at least one of their last five. The Bulls will have a chance to take a step in the right direction on Wednesday. The Pistons are a very beatable team and Chicago should win this one.
It's no secret that this Bulls team revolves around two players. DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine are the two leaders on this team. These two guys couldn't do anything wrong at the beginning of the season, but their recent struggles could be a reason for this Chicago team's shortcomings. Against the Sixers, the Bulls duo were the only players to score 20+ points. In their loss to Milwaukee, only one other teammate scored in the double digits. While they may have solid individual performances, the team performances have not held up.
Article Continues BelowAnother reason for their recent struggles is injuries. This Bulls team has gone through the ringer this season, as far as injuries go. Currently, they have four players listed on their injury report. Nikola Vucevic is the only player listed as questionable. Both Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso, two key contributors for this team, remain out with injuries. When they get those two guys back this Bulls team will look very different. However, for now, at least, it seems like they may continue to struggle.
Why The Pistons Could Cover The Spread
The Detroit Pistons have been one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. Through their first 65 games, they have an abysmal record of 18-47. However, to many people's surprise, they have managed to win five consecutive games. Their most recent victory came over the Atlanta Hawks in overtime by three. Detroit seems to finally be coming together as a team and achieving an impressive level of success for a team that was looked over by everyone. If this was earlier in the season there would be little to talk about, the Bulls would have this in the bag, however, that is not the case anymore. Detroit will look to win their sixth straight and might just be able to do it.
The Pistons' recent success can be attributed to both the success of Cade Cunningham, and to the contribution from many players on the team. Detroit has been relying on around seven guys per game to contribute significant minutes. This strategy has panned out well for the Pistons, who may not be as deep as other teams, but have shown that they have a great competitive drive. If Cade can have another solid night, like his 28 points, 10 assist performance against the Hawks, then the Pistons could pull off another upset. This should be a really interesting match.
For the most part, this team is healthy. Currently, the Pistons have two players listed on their injury report. One of the great things about returning from the break is that teams are actually healthy. It seems that for the most part we are past the peak of COVID absences and teams are getting ready for a late-season push. While the Pistons may not have playoff ambitions, they have shown that they are playing these games to win.
Final Bulls-Pistons Prediction & Pick
This is a difficult decision. Chicago is definitely a better team, but it's tough to pick against momentum. These two teams are trending in opposite directions, and with Detroit being underdogs they look like the more enticing pick. On top of that, these two teams both recently played the Hawks and the Bulls lost but the Pistons won. Detroit is hot right now and they should be your pick. Pick the Pistons to cover.
FINAL BULLS-PISTONS PICK: Detroit Pistons +5.5 (-110)
