Why The Knicks Could Cover The Spread
The New York Knicks have failed to be consistent this season. They have shown glimpses of competitiveness, however, they have been fleeting. Through their first 65 games, they have a losing record of 27-38. However, in spite of struggling this season, the Knicks have managed to win their last two matches. Their most recent win came over the Sacramento Kings by 16. New York will look to carry that same energy and momentum into a significantly tougher match-up. The Mavericks are a tough opponent, and New York will need to play their best basketball if they want to extend their win streak to three.
This Knicks team may not be the most well-balanced, but when their best players go off they become extremely difficult to compete with. That is exactly what happened in their win over the Kings. Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley combined for 102 points. The Knicks actually entered the second half down 15, but they mounted a comeback led by those three guys. While it may not be the most sustainable strategy, when they all start making shots it becomes tough for opponents to hold on. If New York can mimic that performance on Wednesday, then the Mavs might be in trouble.
Article Continues BelowThe Knicks might be the most crippled team in the NBA. Injuries have stunted the growth of this team significantly. Currently, the Knicks have eight players listed on their injury report. Of those players, only Mitchell Robinson is questionable for Wednesday's match. Cam Reddish and Nerlens Noel are still out with injuries. For a team that looked like they were on the cusp of a good season, injuries have really set them back. While they could come out ahead on Wednesday, it will certainly be an uphill battle.
Why The Mavericks Could Cover The Spread
The Dallas Mavericks started this year off slow, but after an eventful trade deadline and restful all-star break, the Mavs have looked hungry. Through their first 65 games, the Mavs have a record of 40-25. Dallas is on an absolute heater right now, coming off five straight wins. They weren't facing easy opponents either. The Mavs took down the Warriors twice, they beat the Lakers and most recently defeated the Jazz by 8. This Mavericks team is really hitting its stride and the Knicks should not be able to stand in their way. If Dallas continues to play at the level they have been playing at, then they should score another win on Wednesday.
While the Mavericks roster may be condensed, with less than 10 players playing in their last match, they have been extremely effective. In their win over the Jazz, Luka led the charge with a dominant performance. Doncic had 35 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists. However, two other players also contributed 20+ points and the rest of the team filled in when needed. This has been a common trend for the Mavs. Luka has been playing great basketball, usually leading the team in at least scoring. Then, a couple of other players put in good performances and score upwards of 20 points, and the rest of the team fills in. This strategy has worked well for the Mavs and will likely persist on Wednesday.
However, even with their recent successes, injuries remain a concern in Dallas. The Mavs currently have five players listed on their injury report. Of those players, only Jalen Brunson is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game. While none of the absences are devastating, it's still a hit to this team's depth. More depth is always better than less depth and the Mavs will need to continue to maneuver around their injuries.
Final Knicks-Mavericks Prediction & Pick
While this game may not be locked up yet, the Mavs have a significant advantage. Dallas is on a hot streak right now, and with so many injuries the Knicks will likely not be able to keep up. Even with their injuries, the Mavs have enough healthy players to dominate in this match. Pick the Mavericks to win and cover.
