Detroit Pistons: +12 (-112)

Atlanta Hawks: -12 (-108)

Over: 212.5 (-110)

Under: 212.5 (-110)

Why The Pistons Could Cover The Spread

The Pistons have yet to win a game this season. Starting off 0-2 is likely not what Detroit anticipated or hoped for. However, the Pistons will have an opportunity to notch their first win of the season against a vulnerable Atlanta team. Detroit started off the season by playing a tough Chicago Bulls team in back-to-back games. While the Pistons couldn’t walk away with a win, they were able to compete in the first game before an uglier second game.

One player who has emerged as a leader for this team is Saddiq Bey. As Bey enters his second season in the league, his role on this Pistons team grows. Last season, the young forward posted a solid rookie campaign. He played 27 minutes a game, and put up 12.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. Through two games this season, Bey is averaging over 33 minutes per game, 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. He is being given an opportunity to prove himself this season. If he can set the pace of the game and lead the Pistons, this match against the Hawks should be competitive.

Another bright spot on this Pistons team has been the defense. While their offense hasn’t been notably explosive, Detroit has been able to hold things down defensively. In a league that is dominated by offense, the Pistons held the Bulls to under 100 points in both of their games. They forced Chicago’s best players to shoot the ball poorly and made the games competitive through their defense. If Detroit’s offense can pick up the slack and the defense can contain Atlanta, the Pistons might just snatch their first win of the season.

Why The Hawks Could Cover The Spread

The Hawks are a top contender in the Eastern Conference. They made a deep run in the playoffs last year, ultimately losing to the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks. While Atlanta may have just lost to the Cavaliers, that shouldn’t impair your view of this team. The Hawks showed in their opening matchup with the Dallas Mavericks that they are serious about this season. They will look to bounce back from their surprising loss to Cleveland and dominate the Pistons.

In their season opener against the Mavericks, the Hawks demonstrated that they can compete and win games against the best teams in the NBA. The Hawks won by 25 and did so without an impressive outing from their star player, Trae Young. Atlanta held Luka Doncic to only 18 points and stopped anyone else on the Mavs from stepping up. Additionally, in spite of Ice Trae’s underperformance, other members of the offense were able to pick up the slack. Six players on the team put up 10 or more points and the ball was distributed very well. Atlanta will be tough to beat if their scoring can remain consistently balanced.

While he may have had an underwhelming debut this season, Trae Young is still the Hawks' dominant star. The fourth-year guard has cemented himself as one of the best offensive talents in the NBA. He averaged 25.3 points and 9.4 assists last season and was the unquestioned leader of this Hawks team. The 2018 fifth overall pick is nicknamed Ice Trae for a reason. He has ice in his veins and will be a big factor in this game for the Hawks. If Trae Young has a good game, Atlanta should have no problem taking care of the winless Pistons.

Final Pistons-Hawks Prediction & Pick

The Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons have very different goals this season. Atlanta has hopes of making a deep playoff run and possibly competing for a championship, while Detroit is just trying to continue to improve as a team. The Hawks are the better team in this matchup. Even with the line being what it is, you should pick the Hawks in this one. Trae Young has yet to have a breakout game and could very well go off against the Pistons. The over/under is pretty low here as well, so the over isn’t a bad pick, but lean toward Atlanta. Lock in the Hawks to get the win and cover.
