The San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers will play in a Western Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. It's time to continue our NBA odds series and make a Spurs-Lakers prediction and pick.
The Spurs and Lakers will battle on Sunday as Los Angeles continues to navigate the early part of their schedule without their leader LeBron James. Somehow, the Lakers have managed to keep their head above water despite a slew of injuries and a rough start to the season from Russell Westbrook, who has became immensely more important in the absence of James. The Spurs are just 4-8 and have struggled to come up with wins consistently early in the 2021-22 season. Due to all of their injury issues, the Lakers are just slim favorites at home over the Spurs on Sunday.

Why The Spurs Can Cover The Spread
Article Continues BelowSan Antonio is somehow 13th in the NBA in net rating despite their 4-8 record. They rank in the top 15 in both offensive and defensive efficiency so far this season, so perhaps they are a bit better than their record shows so far. The Spurs however will not be at full strength on Sunday, particularly in the frontcourt. Jakob Poeltl will miss this contest for the Spurs, which could be big considering the Lakers play Anthony Davis a ton at the center position. If the Spurs can find another option to guard Davis and keep him relatively in check, they could be in good position for a cover and a win on Sunday.
Why The Lakers Can Cover The Spread
The Lakers will obviously be a shell of themselves until they get LeBron James back in the fold, so they will continue to try to keep their head above water on Sunday. As favorites in this spot, this is a good opportunity to pick up a win for the Lakers, who likely will not be favorites over a ton of teams until James is back. Los Angels ranks 22nd in the NBA with a -2.2 net rating, and they're even worse than that when James doesn't play. The Lakers are 4-2 when James plays this season, and +2.9 when he's on the floor overall. Obviously James is as important to the Lakers as anyone is to their team, but Los Angeles could be in a good spot to cover and win on Sunday vs. a struggling Spurs team.
The Lakers list Anthony Davis as probable, so check his final status before making any plays on Los Angeles on Sunday.
Final Spurs-Lakers Prediction & Pick
The Lakers are hard to trust night to night without LeBron James, and the Spurs are hard to trust in general this season. Take the under here, as both teams can play at a slower pace and have the potential to be solid defensively.
