Why the Eagles Could Win
The Eagles have only won two games this season but they have still been a fairly competitive team. Two of their losses came by only one score. Additionally, they have had a decently tough schedule. The Eagles have some pieces and will definitely be looking to shift their momentum on Sunday. Detroit has been abysmal and the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans should feel confident going into Sunday.
Article Continues BelowA bright spot for this Eagles team has been Jalen Hurts. In his first full season as a starter he has been impressive. Hurts has thrown for over 1700 yards and 10 touchdowns. Add to that over 360 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns and you get one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the league. Hurts has been a point of optimism for Philadelphia fans and he will look to dominate a weak Lions team.
The Lions defense is 25th overall in total offensive yards allowed. They allow over 380 yards of offense to opposing teams per game. The Eagles will look to completely expose this weak defense and run up the scoreboards. Philadelphia may not have more than Hurts, but their quarterback is more than capable of picking apart Detroit. If the Eagles offense gets going, then Detroit will have a very tough time keeping up. Philadelphia should have little to no difficulty walking away with a win on the road.
Why the Lions Could Win
The Lions are winless through seven weeks of regular season play. However, their losses haven't all been blowouts. Detroit is due for a win. They have shown flashes of being able to compete with some tough teams. They lost by only two to both the Vikings and the Ravens. Detroit will most likely get a win at some point this season and this week's matchup might be when it happens. Philadelphia has shown that they are vulnerable and if Detroit can capitalize on the Eagles mistakes then maybe they can get their first win.
The biggest gap in the Eagles defense is in their rushing defense. Philadelphia allows over 130 rushing yards a game to opposing back fields. This is a hugely exploitable flaw in the Eagles. Detroit has a more than capable backfield, led by D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. If Detroit can force Philadelphia to respect their ground game then the Lions offense could get going. Goff has struggled but he is still a capable quarterback and if he faces softer coverage due to their run game then he could pick apart the Eagles.
The Lions will be playing this game at home and will be doing everything they can to get their first win. A big part of this game will be dependent on how it's coached. Detroit really has nothing to lose, so expect them to come out firing. The Lions will be fighting for a win. They may feel as if this game against Philly is their best shot at getting a win this season. If the team is coached well and can come together then they could walk away with their first win of the season. Look for Detroit to be aggressive in this match against the Eagles.
Final Eagles-Lions Prediction & Pick
While these two teams may be evenly matched it is simply a bad bet to pick the winless team. The Lions have failed to prove that they can close out games. Detroit has been competitive in some of their losses but have lost momentum. The Eagles are a team that has fought and won a few of their games. Philadelphia is tough and scrappy and will fight hard on Sunday. The line for this game is pretty close. Both of these teams are not at the top of the NFL and Sunday could go many different ways. The safe bet, however, is to side with the Eagles. Pick Philadelphia to win and cover.
FINAL EAGLES-LIONS PICK: Philadelphia Eagles -3.5 (-114)
