This is an incredibly important matchup for both of these teams. The Raiders are currently 6-6, a record that places them right on the edge of the playoff bubble. Beating the Chiefs here would not only give them a leg up in the wild card race, but also give them a chance at winning the AFC West. A Kansas City win here would pretty much secure the division for the Chiefs while simultaneously crushing any playoff hopes that the Raiders have left. This should be an interesting one, so let's get into the pick.

This is the biggest spread the Raiders have faced this season. The last time they entered a game as big underdogs Las Vegas entered their game against the Dallas Cowboys as seven-point underdogs and ended up winning the contest outright. To make things even better, the Chiefs have been mediocre at best against the spread. Kansas City is 5-7 in that category, but that record gets even worse when we look at this matchup. Head coach Andy Reid's squad is 2-5 when they enter a home game as the favorite, and a mere 3-4 when they're coming off of a win. This spread may be a little too large for the Chiefs to handle.

In the aforementioned game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Raiders faced a Dallas defense that is incredibly statistically similar to the defense they will face here. Both squads have earned similar numbers against the run and pass, so it's a very encouraging sign that the Raiders managed to put up 36 points against the Cowboys.

Why The Chiefs Could Cover The Spread

The last time these two teams met, the Chiefs had their best offensive showing of the season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for five touchdowns in a blowout victory that featured 41 Kansas City points. The Raiders have played three games since then, and they've allowed more than 30 points in two of them. This Las Vegas defense is one of the league's worst, and that should show again here against Mahomes and this deadly Chiefs offense.

While it's true that Kansas City is statistically similar to Dallas on defense, the Chiefs have been playing significantly better football lately. In four consecutive wins, Kansas City has allowed more than ten points only once. One of those games was actually against the Cowboys, one of the most potent offenses in the league. The Chiefs have only gotten better on defense since their last matchup with the Raiders, and they were already thoroughly dominant in that game.

The spread is a little bit too big to pick the Chiefs confidently here. Instead, take the over. Both of these teams have the potential for offensive breakouts, and Kansas City nearly broke this over on their own the last time these two teams played.
