Why The Orioles Will Cover The Spread/Win
Cade Povich had a rough start in his MLB debut, but you can chalk that up to nerves. Povich was lights out in his second start, though. That was against a good offense in the Atlanta Braves, as well. He was able to shut down the Braves for six innings, and help the Orioles win that game. Povich proved he has what it takes, and he needs to do that again against the Yankees. If he can carry that start into this one, the Orioles will be able to come away with a victory.
In his two starts, despite giving up 10 total hits, Povich has an average exit velocity of 83.8. He does not allow a lot of hard contact, so teams are getting a little but lucky off him. Along with that, he has an xBA of .201, which is 26 points lower than his actual oBA. Those hits are going to stop falling at some point, and Povich will be dominant when that happens. As long as he keeps Aaron Judge and Juan Soto contained, the Orioles should win this game.
Why The Yankees Will Cover The Spread/Win
Gerrit Cole is making his season debut in this game, and that is great news for the Yankees after there was some worry preseason. Having Cole back just makes the Yankees that much better. In his last rehab start, Cole struck out 10 over 4.1 innings. His stuff is back to being elite, and that is going to show in this game. What was even more impressive is Cole did not walk a single batter in his three rehab starts. His command is very good, and his stuff is elite. Do not expect him to go deep into this game as I am sure the Yankees will be closely monitoring his pitch count, but Cole should be his normal self.
The Yankees have a great offense this season. They are seventh in batting average, third in slugging percentage, second in home runs, first in barrel percentage, and third in average exit velocity. To go along with that, the Yankees rarely chase pitches, and they do not whiff a lot. Their offense is clicking in all facets of the game, so this going to be Povich's toughest matchup of his young career. As long as they keep hitting, the Yankees will win this game.
Final Orioles-Yankees Prediction & Pick
It is the long-awaited season debut for Gerrit Cole, and I am not expecting him to be any different. I think he will pitch like the Cy Young he is and lead the Yankees to a win. I will take New York to win this game straight up.
