The San Diego Padres will kick off the weekend in a battle with the Atlanta Braves in the Peach State. Join us for our MLB odds series where our Padres-Braves prediction and pick will be made.

It hasn't been smooth sailing, to say the least for the Padres this season, but with plenty of games remaining, San Diego still has time to get their season turned around. Overall, the Padres are 23-24 including a 12-8 record away from home. Most recently, the Friars were swept by the Colorado Rockies last time out on the diamond. In line for the start will be veteran Yu Darvish who is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA. Darvish currently leads the league with 18 consecutive scoreless innings.

On the other side of things, the contending Atlanta Braves continue to impress and remind people why they should be taken seriously. With a 26-14 record, the Braves are an elite team at home with a 15-5 mark. Having gone 6-2 in their previous eight games, the Braves will call upon righty Bryce Elder who is 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA.

The Padres took Game 1 of the series 3-1.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

In order to put a halt to their losing ways, a statement performance against a team like the Braves could be just what the doctor ordered.

Through the team's first 26 games, the Padres have been an average squad in all areas. Pitching-wise, San Diego has compiled an ERA of 4.12 which is good for 19th in the MLB. While this isn't a horrific mark, it definitely could use some improving. Against their NL West rivals in the Rockies, it was the Padres that could not get on the same page with their pitching and offense. Not only did the Padres surrender at least five earned runs in all three of their matchups versus Colorado, it was San Diego that reached rock bottom in the 8-0 shutout defeat. After a day off on Thursday, the Padres are hopeful that the rest will help them reset mentally in a positive way.

Above all else, the biggest strength where the Padres may have an advantage by swiping steals and hitting baseballs into the bleachers. Believe it or not, but San Diego ranks within the top ten of the majors in stolen bases and home runs. If Atlanta does happen to throw some mistake pitches in the heart of the strike zone that are too good to pass up for San Diego hitters, then the Padres may be able to inflict some serious damage in this matchup.

Why The Braves Will Cover The Spread/Win

On paper, it appears that the Braves are clearly the better team, but they will need to prove that at Truist Park in front of their home fans.

For starters, Atlanta has delivered to its bettors when serving as favorites. As it stands, the Braves have been favored 37 times already and have been victorious in 26 of those contests which is roughly 70% of the time.

In addition to being a team that often delivers as favorites, the Braves are equipped with one of the hottest hitters in the game. Not needing an introduction, the 12-year slugging vet may be off to the best start to a season in his career. Paving the way for the Braves with 12 home runs, no player in the bigs has recorded more RBIs than Ozuna himself. Some say that Atlanta's designated hitter took a dip in the Fountain of Youth. Others will say that he has changed his approach at the plate. Either way, the production from Ozuna is a sight to behold and his hot bat could end up prevailing Atlanta to a spread-covering triumph.

From the pitching rubber, starter Bryce Elder will need to get into a rhythm and keep San Diego hitters off-balanced. Oftentimes, Elder has endured his fair share of ups and downs this season, but when he is clicking on all cylinders, he becomes tough to beat. Expect the 24-year-old Texas native to stay ahead in counts and have his swing-and-miss stuff working to perfection to further Atlanta's odds of taking care of business.

Final Padres-Braves Prediction & Pick

There is no denying that both teams have the talent to compete in this one, but siding with the Braves at home is probably the wise move.
