Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rockies come into this series as the last-place team in their division and they'll have a long road to getting back to a winning record with a poor start to the season. Their bats have been quiet in the hitter-friendly Coors Field and their pitching hasn't been much better, ranking dead-last in the MLB in ERA. They're just two slots away from the worst record in the league, but they began this series with a big win over the Cardinals team. It was a much-needed win to get over their five-game losing skid and they were able to show their resolve by going yard when it mattered most.

Ryan Feltner has struggled this year controlling his strike zone and he was shelled in his last appearance with eight earned runs through only four innings of action. While he's ranking low in ERA and strikeouts, he's shown a decent capability to sit down batters from the right side of the plate. With an ERA where his is at, he'll certainly need some run support through the early stages if he wants the win. The Rockies have put up 10 runs over their last two games so he should have some help in terms of taking this start into the deeper innings.

Why The Cardinals Will Cover The Spread/Win

The St. Louis Cardinals have seen their fair share of close calls throughout this season already as they rank #3 in saves on the season. Their bullpen has been the highlight of their team and while it hasn't particularly translated to their record, they always like their chances when the game comes down to the wire. They're also very speedy on the base paths and can put themselves in a position to win while playing small ball. They'll trot Kyle Gibson to the mound, who's been racking strikeouts over his last two starts.

Kyle Gibson has only allowed four earned runs through his last three starts and at home, he's 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA. He tends to start the game steady and can force a team like the Rockies to grow frustrated with his ground-ball pitching. The defense behind him has also been solid this year, ranking 13th in assisted plays, so they'll give him a chance early in this game. If Gibson can find his control early, he should be in for another 5+ strikeout total.

Final Rockies-Cardinals Prediction & Pick

The Rockies have had a rough go at it all season and their pitching staff hasn't been performing well through this part of the season. They rank near the bottom in ERA, but they've seen a recent uptick in their offensive output. Still, they'll need a big performance from their bats to have a chance in this one as their starting pitcher has yet to win on the road. If they can repeat their home run performance from lately, they could have a chance in this one.

The St. Louis Cardinals aren't living up to their standard either, but they have a great chance to pick up some wins against this Rockies team during the rest of the series. They're a better team at home than they are on the road and they'll have the clear pitching advantage here with Kyle Gibson on the mound. He's 2-1 at home and with these Rockies' bats hitting homers lately, he has a good chance to switch the tone and pitch for some strikeouts here.

The Rockies haven't been particularly good this year and given the advantageous pitching matchup and home-field for the Cardinals, we like them to take this game and bounce back during this series.
