Why The Rockies Could Cover The Spread

Article Continues Below

The Rockies' offense is not one of the top ones, but they are not bad either. They are 21st on the season in runs scored, 16th in batting average, 24th in on-base percentage, and 19th in slugging. Ryan McMahon is the team leader in home runs and RBIs this season. McMahon has 15 home runs this year with 46 RBIs. He has not been hitting well this month. He is hitting just .172 on the month, with five RBIs and three home runs. McMahon has scored seven times this month, but he has struggled with strikeouts. He has 24 strikeouts on the month and has one in every game this month except one.

CJ Cron has been hitting well this month, hitting .319 on the month with ten RBIs. He also has five home runs with nine runs scored this month. Cron has been one of the best bats in this offense but he is dealing with a stiff back. He has missed the last two games with a back issue and could be missing more time. The Rockies may want to be careful with Cron. He is a major target for some contending teams, so being conservative and keeping him healthy could keep him out of the lineup tonight.

Meanwhile, Randal Grichuk is hitting great this month. He is hitting .343 on the month with six RBIs and four home runs. He has also been seeing the ball well. Grichuk has just two walks in the month, but he also has struck out just five times. Meanwhile, Nolan Jones is starting to hit better. In the series with Miami, he went 2-8 with a home run and three RBIs. He is hitting just .162 this month, and also struggling with strikeouts. He has 20 strikeouts so far this month and has struck out in each game this month.

Jake Bird will be on the mound for the Rockies. He has made just two starts this year. His first one on June 21st he went two innings and did not give up a run. Then last time out on July 18th, he gave up three runs in just one inning of work. This will be a bullpen game for the Rockies which may not be good for them. The Rockies bullpen has a 4.59 ERA, which is 26th in the majors.

Why The Nationals Could Cover The Spread

Pitching will also be a storyline for the Nationals as well. They are 27th in the majors in team ERA while sitting 28th in WHIP and 29th in opponent batting average. It will be Patrick Corbin on the mound today for the Nationals. He is 6-10 on the year with a 4.89 ERA. Last time out he went 5.1 innings and gave up three runs. The time before that, Corbin was at his best. He went seven innings giving up just one run in a win over the Rangers. The Nationals will want to have him go deep today. They have one of the worst bullpens in the majors and need Corbin to eat some innings.

The Nationals' offense has been solid as of late. They have had over ten hits in each of the last two games, and on the season and fifth in team batting average. They just do not score enough, sitting 22nd in runs scored, while also 17th in on-base percentage and 18th in slugging. Lane Thomas has been amazing as of late. Not only is he 12th in the majors with a .295 batting average, he stole four bases in the game Sunday. On the month, he has five stolen bases, with a .269 batting average. He has two home runs and 11 RBIs this month, while also hitting five doubles and scoring 11 times.

Keibert Ruiz is also having a good month. He is hitting .306 on the month, with seven RBIs and two home runs. The two home runs and six of RBIs have come in his last six games. He has also scored six times this month, with five coming in the last six games. Trade target Jeimer Candelario has not been hitting as well. He is hitting .208 on the month, but he is producing some runs. He has nine RBIs on the month with the help of five home runs. Candelario has also scored 11 times this month, including in three of his last four games.

Final Rockies-Nationals Prediction & Pick

In a game with Patrick Corbin pitching for the Nationals, it is hard to believe the Nationals have the pitching edge, but they do. Corbin has had some solid starts as of late and has shown he still has a little left in the tank. Meanwhile, the Nationals' offense has been hot. They are hitting well, and driving in a lot of runs. The Nationals have struggled to score runs this year due to poor batting with runners in scoring position. They turned that around in the Giants series and will keep it up today. The Nationals are the pick over the Rockies in this one.

Final Rockies-Nationals Prediction & Pick: Nationals -1.5 (+128)
