The red-hot Colorado Rockies will look to put their winning streak on the line when they square off with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Join us for our MLB odds series where our Rockies-Padres prediction and pick will be revealed.

What happened to the Colorado Rockies as we knew them? Despite still owning a lackluster 12-28 record, it was Colorado that buckled down and swept the reigning defending champion Texas Rangers over the weekend at Coors Field. Not only did the Rockies surprisingly sweep the Rangers, but the triumphant feat over Texas also served as Colorado's first series win on the entire season. While the Rockies might have dug themselves far too deep a hole at this point in the season, it was encouraging to say the least for Colorado. Responsible for leading his team to another victory will be former Padre Cal Quantrill who is 2-3 with a 3.94 ERA.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres have hovered around the .500 mark as of late with a 22-21 record overall. Most recently, the Friars managed to take two of three games over the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in impressive fashion. Although, San Diego still has plenty of work to do as the season continues to progress, beating the usual dominant Dodgers is always an encouraging sign moving forward. In line for the start is projected to be righty Dylan Cease who is 5-2 with a 3.19 ERA in eight starts on the season.

Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

Who are these Rockies and what did you do to them? In the wild world of sports, there are certain things that cannot be explained and defy common sense as a whole. Without a doubt, this is one of those instances. Through the better part of the team's first 40 games of the season, the Rockies haven't just looked like the worst team in the majors this season, but at times, they've played like one of the more porous squads in baseball history. Regardless, things can change quickly, and the Rockies are showing massive improvement.

On paper, it is without question that Cal Quantrill will need to turn back the clock to his Cleveland days to keep a dangerous Padres lineup on their toes. Dating back to the 2021 and 2o22 seasons, Quantrill was considered to be one of the more underrated twirlers in the game. After a rough campaign in 2023 to say the least, the Rockies decided to give him an opportunity to make a name for himself within a depleted starting rotation. In his last 13.2 innings pitched, Quantrill has surrendered only one run and has pitched very well recently. If the 29-year-old righty can shut down the San Diego bats, then the Rockies may end up in good shape.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

At first glance, there is no denying that the Padres have a talent advantage in comparison to the last-place Rockies, but just like any team you face that happens to be hotter than fish grease, a complete game by San Diego will be more than necessary in order to cool down Colorado.

All in all, it begins with a furious start to this ballgame in all aspects from the ‘Friars. In front of the home faithful, there is no excuse for San Diego not to draw first blood. By striking first on the scoreboard, the Padres will be able to extinguish any confidence that the Rockies may carry over from their previous series to the West Coast. Similarly to Cal Quantrill for Colorado, it'll be up to Dylan Cease to knock the Rockies offense off their pedestal.

Believe it or not, the Rockies have scored a whopping 30 runs in their previous five games. In order to put a halt to this recently resurgent offense, Cease and company have to play sharp all evening long. By staying ahead in the count and not giving them anything good to hit, Cease can use his high strikeout to his advantage. In his lone start against the Rockies back on April 22nd, Cease fired seven innings of one-run baseball and also punched out eight batters en route to the 3-1 victory.

Final Rockies-Padres Prediction & Pick

Can the Rockies continue to play out of their minds? Only time will tell if they can continue their winning ways, but it is probably wise to take them to cover the +1.5 run spread.
