The New York Yankees travel to the West Coast to battle it out with the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. It is time to take a look at our MLB odds series where our Yankees-Angels prediction and pick will be revealed.
Here come the ‘Yanks! Equipped with the best record in the American League at 37-18, New York still happens to find themselves in a dogfight within the AL East division. Currently, the Yankees have a 1.5-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles for first place. Fresh off a 5-2 loss at the hands of the San Diego Padres, New York will no doubt want to get back on track when they call upon southpaw Nestor Cortes for the start. In eleven starts this season, Cortes is 3-4 with a 3.29 ERA.
Meanwhile, the Angels are once again staring into the eyes of misery. Following the disheartening news regarding Mike Trout being sidelined for the rest of the year due to a torn meniscus, Los Angeles has sported a lousy 9-15 record during his absence. Overall, the ‘Halos season is quickly getting out of hand as they enter play with a 20-33. With RHP Griffin Canning ready to take the mound for this series opener, can he help the Angels snap their three-game losing streak and turn the season before it is too late?

Why The Yankees Will Cover The Spread/Win
Without a doubt, the Yankees are one of (if not) the best teams in baseball at the moment. Indeed, one of the main reasons why New York has looked like an entirely new ball club from a year ago happens to be in large part thanks to a tremendous balance of play in nearly all facets of the game. Not only are the Yankees a supreme hitting squad, but they also boast the lowest ERA in baseball.
At the plate, it is the ‘Yanks that rank first in OPS, OBP, and home runs. Led by the terrorizing one-two punch of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, New York will cover the spread and win this game if they can receive an insane amount of production from this pair of sluggers. Surprisingly, both Judge and Soto went a combined 2-7 with only one RBI in the latest loss to the Padres. All in all, don't expect that to be the case against an Angels squad that ranks third-to-last in earned-run average.
Not to mention, Cortes is no slouch on the mound either.
In his last outing, he tossed a gem en route to giving up only three hits in five innings of scoreless baseball. In addition, the feisty lefty has never lost to the Angels in his career as he possesses a 2-0 record and a 3.20 ERA versus New York's cross-coast AL counterparts. Even if the Yankees have an off night with the sticks, rely on Cortes to get the job done.
Why The Angels Will Cover The Spread/Win
With each passing day, it appears that the Angels may be in the midst of a lost season. Obviously, the loss of their superstar who is extremely injury prone is a tough pill to swallow, but LA is at a serious talent disadvantage against most teams they play.
Nevertheless, there is a magic behind the beautiful sport of baseball, and even the teams that aren't supposed to win on paper can absolutely be victorious once nine frames are in the books.
For starters, despite the team being in the face of a whole lot of ugliness, starting hurler Griffin Canning has had a stellar May from the rubber. In fact, the 28-year-old from Mission Viejo, California has allowed two runs or less in four straight starts. Although it did take a while for Canning to shake off the rust to begin the 2024 regular season, LA may need to ride or die on the right arm of their starting man on the mound.
If all else comes to fail, be on the lookout for left-fielder Taylor Ward to be a tough out within the Angels batting lineup. Statistically, Ward is answering the call in a big way with his team-leading .274 batting average, 11 home runs, and 32 RBIs. In the long run, the ‘Halos bats lack skill, but Ward could end up making up for it in a big way.
Final Yankees-Angels Prediction & Pick
It is possible that the Angels may keep this one close in the early going, but it will be the Yankees that ultimately prevail in convincing fashion.
