An MVP candidate in Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard absorbed a hit to his left knee in the third quarter of their game against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night. His injury situation led him to finish the game early as he watched his team get clobbered by the visiting Mavericks in a 132-92 drubbing on their home floor.

Damian Lillard encountered a collision with Mavericks guard Josh Richardson as the two players went down and fought for possession of the ball. He tried to stay in the game but he didn't last long on the court as he was eventually subbed out in the closing minutes of the third quarter.

To make matters worse, he claimed that he took a hit on the same knee which he also injured back on Feb. 16 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Via Jamie Hudson of NBC Sports Northwest:

“It’s the same knee that I got kneed in against OKC and it had never stopped being sore from that game. So to get kneed on that same spot again, I knew that it would react like this and it would be swollen.”

The Oakland native played a total of 30 minutes and failed to find his shooting stroke as he went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc en route to 19 points. With the 132-92 loss, Damian Lillard and the Blazers have dropped back to a 25-17 record for the sixth spot in the Western Conference.

Despite sustaining another injury, Lillard remains confident that he can get past the pain:

“It’s not like a thing that I’m concerned with, it’s just dealing with the stiffness and the swelling.”

Damian Lillard now joins the list of injured MVP frontrunners in Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid. Luckily for the Blazers, it doesn't seem like their superstar will be missing any time, but he's going to be playing through some pain.
