The Toronto Blue Jays made a stunning in-season move, electing to fire manager Charlie Montoyo amid a slide down the standings. The move will sound less stunning after you hear what this Blue Jays player had to say about Montoyo. Here are his words, via Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic.

“When you’re 1-9, you’re looking for someone to come in and either kick you in the ass or pump you up, just something, some guidance,” one player told The Athletic, making reference to the Jays’ recent skid. “And you could have it as players, for sure, and we did, but you really do need it coming from the top and that just wasn’t happening.”

The Blue Jays player said that after a 1-9 stretch, the team just needed “someone to come in and either kick you in the ass or pump you up.” He acknowledged that players can fill that role.

However, it seems that the Blue Jays really needed to hear it from their manager. According to this player, that “wasn't happening.” It's a pretty damning indictment of Montoyo, who had compiled a .500 winning percentage in four seasons at the helm, though he was coming off of a 91-win season in 2021.

Still, it's a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business- and the Blue Jays manager didn't have a whole lot to show for himself in that department.

The Blue Jays players felt they needed a different voice than Charlie Montoyo in the clubhouse. They got one. Now, it's up to them to begin playing better on the field.

If not, Toronto may have themselves a bigger problem.
