Boise State football hasn't had a losing season since 1997. However, at 5-5, Boise State football is on the verge of seeing their impressive streak come to an end.

As a response, head coach Andy Avalos has been fired, via Pete Thamel of ESPN. Defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson has been named the interim head coach. While he was sad to see Avalos go, athletic director Jeramiah Dickey knew it was time for a change.

“I am grateful for the passion, effort and dedication Andy has given to our community and alma mater while serving as our head coach,” Dickey said. “Andy will always be a Bronco and we wish him and his family all the best in their next steps.

Boise State hired Avalos as their head coach in 2021. Over his almost three seasons, Avalos led the Broncos to a 22-14 overall record. Boise State won the Frisco Bowl over North Texas in 2022. That same season, Avalos was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year.

However, things have fallen off the wagon for Avalos and the Broncos in 2023. Boise State was blown out 56-19 in their opener against Washington. They fell to both UCF and Memphis as well, with their only out of conference win over North Dakota. Inside the Mountain West, Boise State has already lost to Colorado State and Fresno State.

Boise State might still be 4-2 in the Mountain West. They'll have two more opportunities to gain bowl game eligibility. However, to Dickey and company, the Broncos had become stagnant under Andy Avalos. Boise State will now look to continue their winning season streak under Danielson. Avalos will have to look for another opportunity at the D1 level.
