With the 2022 MLB season just days away from beginning, the league handed out a few suspensions for positive PED tests to three free agents, Richard Rodriguez, Jose Rondon and Danny Santana. On Tuesday, another player was punished for a positive PED test. Milwaukee Brewers catcher Pedro Severino was hit with an 80-game suspension. Severino revealed the shocking reason for taking the PED that led to his punishment, as reported by ESPN.

“Since late 2020, my wife and I had been trying to start a family unsuccessfully,” he said. “When we returned to the Dominican Republic after the 2021 season, we sought medical assistance to determine why we had not succeeded. One of the doctors I consulted with prescribed me with a medication to treat infertility issues. Unfortunately, I now know that the medication contained Clomiphene.”

Per ESPN, Severino revealed that he and his wife were “trying to start a family unsuccessfully.” The veteran catcher was prescribed a medication to treat his infertility issues, which contained Clomiphene, a performance-enhancing drug.

The Brewers catcher apologized to the organization, his teammates and the fans. The 28-year-old spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.

Severino posted a .690 OPS with 11 homers and a career-high 46 RBI in 113 games plated in 2021. He signed a one-year, $1.9 million contract with Milwaukee back in November.

Unfortunately, the Brewers will be without their new backstop for about half the season. Omar Narvaez and Brett Sullivan will handle the catching duties in his absence.
