Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio says that quarterback Joe Flacco will not play in his team's Week 9 game against the Cleveland Browns next Sunday due to a neck injury, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

For those hoping to see rookie Drew Lock start in his place, that won't be happening, as Pelissero notes that Brandon Allen will be under center.

Flacco's run as the Broncos' starting quarterback has been lackluster, to say the least.

Through eight games, Flacco has thrown for 1,822 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 85.1.

Denver acquired Flacco via trade with the Baltimore Ravens during the offseason.

Quarterback has been a pressing issue for the Broncos ever since Peyton Manning retired at the end of the 2015-16 campaign. Whether it was Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch or Case Keenum, Denver tried numerous options under center, but none of them were successful.

To be fair to the Broncos, Flacco was mainly viewed as a stopgap for the Broncos as they groomed their next young signal-caller, which has turned out to be Lock, whom Denver selected in the second round of the NFL Draft back in April.

However, Fangio stated all offseason that he did not think Lock was ready to be a starter in the NFL, which is reflected in his decision to go to Allen rather than Lock in Flacco's absence.

The Broncos are just 2-6 on the season and are on their way to missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
