The Denver Broncos have not gone after any veteran quarterbacks this offseason, as they seem very committed to Drew Lock moving forward.

Some have suggested that the Broncos should sign Cam Newton or Jameis Winston for some stability, but earlier this week, general manager John Elway explained why Denver has not done that.

“There are some quarterbacks that are still available, but we decided that we’re going to build around Drew and give him that opportunity to take the job,” Elway said during a conference call, via Jon Heath of Broncos Wire.

The Broncos drafted Lock in the second round last spring, but due to a preseason thumb injury, he ended up missing most of his rookie campaign.

He ultimately got his first start in December and proceeded to start the final five games of the season for Denver, throwing for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 64.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 89.7. Also, the Broncos went 4-1 during that stretch.

“Obviously by no means has Drew ‘made it,'” added Elway. “We believe he’s got the potential to do it, and we think he’s just going to continue to get better and better. He’s still in the learning process and knows that he’s going to have to get better. We really liked what we saw [last year].”

The Broncos have been struggling to find a quarterback ever since Peyton Manning retired at the conclusion of the 2015-16 campaign, shuffling through names like Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and, most recently, Joe Flacco until Lock took the reins.
