Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores made some serious allegations towards Denver Broncos president of football operations John Elway and executive Joe Ellis, who he says showed up to his 2019 interview for Denver's head coaching vacancy “completely disheveled” and hungover from a night of heavy drinking. Flores' allegations against Elway were part of his bombshell lawsuit against teams and the NFL for racial discrimination. On Thursday, Elway responded to Flores' allegations that Denver didn't take the interview seriously, via Broncos Insider Troy Renck.

Broncos executive John Elway says that he took Brian Flores “very seriously” as a candidate, noting that he and the rest of the group were engaged with the former Dolphins head coach during the interview.

Elway then provided a firm rebuttal to Flores' allegations that he was “disheveled” from drinking, saying that it may have appeared that way because of a lack of sleep due to a flight.

Flores clearly believes that Elway and the Broncos treated his interview as merely a steppingstone to satisfy the league's Rooney Rule. If this is true, it's a very serious problem for the NFL and its quest for more diversity.

It remains to be seen how this process will play out, but it's clear that Brian Flores is willing to put his reputation on the line for the alleged transgressions of Broncos executive John Elway and others across the league.
