The Denver Broncos managed to secure their starting quarterback after trading for Joe Flacco this offseason. It seems his former teammate Steve Smith has high expectations for his stint in Denver.

Flacco has made it clear that he was brought in to help Denver win football games as opposed to mentoring quarterback Drew Lock. According to Kyle Bailey of WFNZ, Smith strongly disagreed with the notion that he was not added to help with Lock's development:

“Is he gonna teach him? Of course. They're gonna be in meetings for six and a half, seven hours a day for the next six, seven months,” said Smith. “He may not look at himself as a mentor, but he's gonna teach him things. They're gonna have dialogues and they're gonna have conversations that are all football, all life … that you're just gonna have. He may not see himself as (a mentor), but that's what he's gonna be.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Smith's comments. Flacco's experience and veteran status are likely two of the major reasons why the Broncos decided to pull the trigger on making him their start moving forward. Although he is slated to lead the offense in the 2019 NFL season, there is no question that Denver would like Lock to pick his brain as much as possible.

Of course, this leaves Flacco in a rather precarious situation. He was asked to take on a similar last year with the Baltimore Ravens when they brought in his successor in quarterback Lamar Jackson, The only difference being that Jackson was a first-rounder that was slated to make an immediate impact while Lock's second-round status indicates that the Broncos are willing to take their time with his progression. regardless, Smith expects Flacco to play a heavy part in his development.
