Trading for a superstar quarterback in Russell Wilson was a no-brainer. However, the Denver Broncos made the move for the former Seattle Seahawks QB more than just because of his status.

Speaking on Wednesday, Broncos president John Elway spoke about the trade that landed them Wilson and their thinking behind the decision. Everyone knows what Wilson can do, but for Denver, he fits well to the team and what they are trying to accomplish.

“He was the piece we needed. We had a good football team around him and I think George (Paton) did a tremendous job of putting that deal together and getting him here. It's great to see the fan base energized again,” Elway said, per Mike Klis of 9Sports.

“We've got a chance to compete in the AFC West, which obviously is going to be tough. But again like anything we've got to stay healthy. We've had a tough time doing that the last several years. If we can stay healthy, Russ has been there, he's won Super Bowls, he knows what it takes and the leadership he's provided has been tremendous.”

There's no lies there for sure. After all, Russell Wilson is not only a Super Bowl champion (2014), but also a proven winner with his 104-53-1 regular season record and seven Pro Bowl selections.

The Broncos and Wilson also looked like a match made in football heaven. Wilson helped took down the Broncos in his lone Super Bowl win with the Seahawks, while Denver last won the championship in the 2015 season. They haven't had a lot of success separately in the past five years, but their partnership might just be what they need to get back to the biggest stage in the sport.
