Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon has recently agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with the Denver Broncos. Gordon will now be joining a backfield that already includes Pro Bowler Phillip Lindsay. Many fans and NFL experts questioned the move since the Broncos already have a Pro Bowl running back.

In a recent interview with Alexis Perry, Broncos head coach Vic Fangio and general manager John Elway both addressed the running back situation.

“Exactly how that will look remains to be seen,” Fangio said. “But it’s pretty common right now in the NFL that most teams have two backs that do a bulk of the ball-carrying or playing the running back position, divvying up the third-down responsibilities.

“So I don’t see it as a problem getting enough work for both of them. We’re happy to have them both.”

Aside from running the ball, Gordon has done a phenomenal job catching the ball. In four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Gordon has caught 224 passes for 1,873 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Broncos general manager John Elway expressed that Melvin will be catching the ball this upcoming season.

“[Gordon has] scored a lot of touchdowns and has caught the football a ton,” Elway said. “So we feel like with him — with Melvin as well as Phillip — that we’ve got a great one-two punch, and we’ll only get better in the backfield.”

Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see the Broncos backfield this upcoming season. After missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, they'll be seeking to return.
