The Denver Broncos have seemingly pushed themselves on the outside looking in to secure the final playoff spot in the final two games of the regular season.

It has put int the picture dialogue concerning the team deciding to let go of Vance Joseph after his second year at the helm. This has also tossed former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan's names around possible choice for the position, which has quickly been shot down, according to Mike Klis of 9News.

This shouldn't come as much of the surprise at this point as Shanahan has been out of the league since after the 2013 season when he last spent four years with the Washington Redskins as their head coach/executive vice president. In the years that have followed, his name has come up sporadically with various other open head coaching vacancies but hasn't truly entertained the possibility of coming back.

Instead, it has further cemented the notion that he has moved from coaching the NFL at this point in his life. His son and current San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had already essentially shut down the potential of his father being a candidate for the opening that the Green Bay Packers currently have. This has put forth that notion that it will have to be quite a lucrative offer for him to even consider getting back into the mix after being away for five years.

Given how things have transpired with Jon Gruden with the Oakland Raiders in his first year back after a long absence, the Broncos may think twice about their pursuit of Shanahan. There would be a major adjustment period that could prove to be quite difficult for him to make after being away for quite some time. That said, Shanahan's name can effectively be taken out of the mix.
