The Cleveland Browns' 2021 season was defined by the fallout between Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. Their 8-9 record was a few games away from the playoffs but the disappointing play from the offense killed their chances.

With Beckham long gone from the Browns and Mayfield being pushed out the door as Cleveland hopes to trade him, two defensive players are looking back on the beef. Cornerback Greg Newsome III and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah talked about it with the Varsity House Podcast.

Both players, who spent their rookie seasons with the 2021 Browns, discussed what a great teammate Beckham is because he always looks out for his teammates. Newsome II added that Mayfield is a great teammate, too, echoing previous comments from Nick Chubb. He said that the relationship between Mayfield and Beckham was always “off” and that the whole ordeal was “distracting” for the team.

The lack of an on-field connection between the two, followed by the infamous YouTube video from Beckham's father chronicling all the times Mayfield missed an open Beckham, brought the situation to a point of no return. Cleveland released Beckham, who went on to win the Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams, while Mayfield and the Browns floundered, losing three straight games to miss the playoffs.

After the beef between QB and WR, the Browns are now moving forward with a new type of controversy after trading for Deshaun Watson. He will team up with Amari Cooper as Cleveland seeks a return to the postseason.
