Details are emerging on the rift between Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and former receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

The Cleveland Browns Friday released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. amid the controversy surrounding the video his father posted on social media.

It is hard to imagine just how badly this all fell apart. But, apparently the seeds were sewn early on during this partnership, as described by ESPN staff writer Jake Trotter.

During Beckham Jr's and Mayfield's first training camp together, things were already getting heated. Mayfield scrambled outside the pocket, but none of his receivers came back to the ball.

‘”Work the f—ing scramble drill!”  Mayfield screamed, spiking the ball in disgust. The crowd, which had come to see Mayfield throw Beckham touchdowns, reacted in collective stunned silence.”‘

That was only the beginning of the problems on the field. Beckham Jr later said “once we get on the same page… it's gonna be scary.”

That never happened, as it seemed they could never get on the same page, as Trotter explained:

“Late in the fourth quarter in Week 4 in Minnesota, the Browns were on the verge of putting the Vikings away. Mayfield thought Beckham would break off his route. Beckham saw the coverage differently. And with nothing but green turf in front of him, he kept running. By then, it was too late. Mayfield had already fired the ball. And the result was an embarrassing underthrow.”

During their time together, Mayfield has been a much better and more efficient quarterback when targeting anyone other than Beckham Jr. On a scale of 0-100, Mayfield's QBR is 58 when targeting Beckham Jr. With other receivers, it was 85.2.

One former Browns team source said “Odell is in his head, and [Mayfield] is pressing every time [Beckham] is around… Odell throws him off . … and it gets all f—ed up from there because Baker becomes indecisive.”

The sky appeared to be the limit when the Browns signed Beckham Jr. Mayfield was coming off a record-setting rookie season. The Browns had built a strong offensive line, and were in the process of building up the defense. The acquisition of Beckham seemed to be what would finally put Cleveland over the top.

Sadly, once again things have gone wrong in Cleveland and everyone is left scratching their heads.
