Since selected with the first overall pick in this year's draft, former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has been put in unique position with the franchise as the future under center. However, he has entered a situation where there is already a proven commodity in place with Tyrod Taylor holding a grip hold on the starting job.

This hasn't particularly derailed his ability to both learn on the job while competing for playing time. According to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, head coach Hue Jackson has voiced that he believes that Mayfield has done an exceptional job at being able to work well in the position that he has been so far this offseason.

“Baker’s done a great job of allowing Tyrod to be the leader of this offensive football team, but not stymieing who he is [as a leader],” Jackson said. “I think it’s really important that our players be who they are each and every day, and I can see Baker doing that with the units that he spends a lot of time with. And I think that’s important, but the dynamics between those two guys have been outstanding.”

It is a difficult spot that the 23-year-old is in after stepping into the offseason with the spotlight of the first overall pick on him. Mayfield has been able to show the team that he can handle this type of situation while possibly making a case to be moved up the depth chart ahead of his rookie campaign.

He is in a situation where he doesn't necessarily have the pressure to be the starter from the get-go given that Taylor has held that spot since being acquired earlier this offseason. At the same time, it is a chance for him to earn the respect of his teammates and how to operate at the next level both on an off the field.

There is a tremendous amount of expectations on him once he gets on the field, but it's a process that has already shown enough couraging progress for the coaching staff.
