Fans who want to see Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield in action before the regular season kicks off will get their wish on Thursday night, as the team is expected to send the first-overall pick to the field in the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions.

The Browns have already released a list of players, via 247 Sports, who will not see action for tonight’s game, including starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor and excluding Mayfield. In other words, the former Oklahoma Sooners star is going to start against the Lions.

Wide receivers Josh Gordon and Jarvis Landry, cornerback Denzel Ward, safety Jabrill Peppers, running backs Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson Jr., linebackers Jamie Collins and Christian Kirksey, tight end David Njoku, and defensive lineman Myles Garrett are also sitting out.

Preseason finales, just like other games in this phase of the NFL’s calendar, are merely glorified joint practices. There’s no real sense of urgency for teams to play their most important players and expose them to injury risk. If anything, the youngsters have more to gain in these kind of contests than the veterans.

Mayfield didn’t have the smoothest of performance the last time he was on the field, passing for 76 yards and an interception on 8-of-12 completions during last week’s low-scoring 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s had his moments, though. In the preseason opener, Mayfield went 11-of-20 for 212 yards and two touchdowns against zero interceptions to lead the Browns to a 20-10 road win over the New York Giants.

While the Browns will be relying on Taylor for starting duties under center, it’s generally expected that Baker Mayfield will take over the job at some point. If not this season, it’s likely going to happen next year, with Taylor’s current contract set to expire at the end of the 2018 campaign.
