The Cleveland Browns’ choice for the No. 1 pick has gone through many twists and turns over the past few months, with Sam Darnold and Josh Allen widely tipped to be their top two options. But with just days ahead of the NFL Draft, it could yet take another unexpected turn.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is apparently “definitely” in play for the Browns at No. 1 overall.

Just to add a bit more murkiness to top of draft: one NFL executive said this morning that Baker Mayfield is “definitely” in Cleveland’s conversation to become the No. 1 overall pick.

To be fair, Browns general manager John Dorsey stated just last week that all options remain open for Cleveland with that No. 1 pick. Although Darnold and Allen have been the two most popular names linked with them, it’s not completely unthinkable that they would at least consider Mayfield at that spot.

While not quite the physical specimen that Allen is, Mayfield does have a proven track record of being an accurate quarterback. And despite comparisons to former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, Mayfield may have an actual shot at being the best quarterback among this class’ “Big 4” at the position.

Given how close those four consensus top quarterbacks seemingly are, it’s still a defensible decision for the Browns to take Mayfield. Of course, no one can truly know for sure whether he actually is in the running, especially with rampant speculation sprouting out from all over the place in the days leading up to the draft.

But with just a couple days left, it won’t be long now until everyone finally gets to know Cleveland’s true choice at No. 1, whether it's Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, or someone else entirely.
