When Tom Brady chose to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, everyone was curious about whether Chris Godwin would change his number. Following the signing of the legendary quarterback, Godwin said that he will defer to Brady on the No. 12 jersey.
“My phone has been blowing up non-stop on all my socials, texts and calls. Everybody wants to know the same thing,” Godwin said when asked about TB12 and No. 12 on ESPN's “NFL Live” on Friday. “But for me I'm very passionate about the number, it's something I've been wearing it since I was in high school but at the end of the day, if he doesn't want it then I'll keep it.
As Chris Godwin noted, the No. 12 jersey is special to him, being the number he's worn since his playing days in high school.
While exclaiming how passionate he is about the number, Chris Godwin admitted that Brady deserves the number.
“But if he does, out of respect for everything he's accomplished and everything that he's done I will kinda have to defer to him. He's the G.O.A.T., you know. If he's willing to give it up, perfect but if he's not, then I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.”
This past season, Chris Godwin had a breakout season with the Buccaneers, corralling a career-high 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns. On the other hand, Brady is arguably the greatest quarterback of all-time.
With it being the offseason, Brady and Godwin have some time to hammer out the details on who will be sporting the No. 12 jersey in 2020. In the event that Chris Godwin lets Brady have the number, he could net a pretty penny from the future Hall of Famer.
