The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed veteran center Josh LeRibeus, the team announced on Friday.
Tampa Bay had an open roster spot for training camp after releasing running back Shaun Wilson last week, reducing its number of players to 89. Though some assumed the Buccaneers were on the verge of a significant personnel move due to Wilson's sudden departure, they ultimately oped to shore up depth along the offensive line, a weak point for the team last season. Tampa Bay first familiarized itself with LeRibeus earlier this month during mini-camp, when he was one of five veteran players who participated on a try-out basis.
A six-year pro, LeRibeus was selected by the Washington Redskins in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. After appearing in five games as a rookie, he came into his sophomore season woefully out of shape, causing Washington to leave him off the active roster for the entirety of 2013. LeRibeus returned to action in 2014, appearing in seven games, and enjoyed his most productive season to date a year later, when he appeared in all of the Redskins' regular season games, starting 11 at center. He was re-signed by Washington the following March, only to be released before the team kicked off the 2016 season.
LeRibeus' next NFL opportunity came in January 2017, when he was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was waived after mini-camp before signing with the New Orleans Saints. LeRibeus appeared in every game with the Saints in 2017, and started three games with the team last season only to be placed on injured reserve as the result of an ankle injury incurred in Week 7.
