A Greek scholar has been given the boot after inexplicably sending out a racist remark aimed towards Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to a report by Yahoo! News, a man named Konstantinos Kalemis has been relieved of his government-affiliated post after labeling Giannis Antetokounmpo as a “monkey” on Twitter. While Kalemis deleted his tweet quickly after, it proved to be too late for him. Greek Education Minister Niki Kerameus was quick to fire Kalemis for his racist barb.

“We unequivocally condemn the racist and highly offensive messages of this educator. Such behaviour has no place in our education system,” Kerameus tweeted.

For some context, Kalemis' comment came after Giannis denounced the prominence of racism within the Greek society. In an appearance on a documentary posted by Bleacher Report, Antetokounmpo shared his controversial take on the matter:

“Greece is a country of whites, where the life of a man of my skin colour can be difficult. You can find yourself in different neighbourhoods and face a lot of racism.”

Clearly, systemic racism is not unique to the United States. It remains prominent in pretty much every corner of the world wherein colored people are a minority. This despicable act by a well-educated Greek scholar is a further testament to the fact that intellectuals themselves are not immune to racism.

Antetokounmpo has yet to comment on the matter, but perhaps it would be safe to say that the reigning MVP will be pleased to hear about the swift action taken by the Greek government.
