Milwaukee Bucks big man Pau Gasol is bound to miss participation in the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup after undergoing surgery on his left foot, which ruled him out for the season. However, he will look forward to being involved with his home country of Spain and represent them in the upcoming 2020 Olympics.

“I’ve already went through the worst part of the surgery. I’m now looking forward to recover and start working at the gym,” said Gasol, according to John Askounis of EuroHoops. “However, my injury won’t allow me to be with the Spanish National Team at China for the World Cup. I wish the best of luck to the National Team.”

“This summer is going to be difficult, because I would have preferred to be with the National Team. For me the National Team has always been important. I’m always very proud to compete for the National Team and achieve success.”

Gasol's NBA future alone seems murky, as the 38-year-old played only three games for the Bucks after being released from the San Antonio Spurs in a mutual buyout agreement on March 1.

Gasol has played 18 seasons in the league and has always been a willing participant and leader of the Spanish national team, yet coach Sergio Scariolo might soon start thinking of the new wave of players that will need time on the floor, as Gasol's career is quickly reaching its tail end of productivity.

“Due to my age, it’s normal for people to speculate I won’t be able to continue,” said Gasol. “I love what I do. I love playing and I want to extend my career. That’s why I went through surgery, to continue playing at the highest level, to be ready for the next season.”

The 7-footer played only 30 games this 2018-19 season, averaging a whisker under four points per game and seeing the fewest minutes of his NBA career.
