Boxing star Canelo Alvarez made quick work of mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim last month in Miami Gardens, Florida. Even before that fight, Alvarez had another challenger in mind.

That challenger has arrived.

Matchroom Promotions announced Friday the WBC, WBA and The Ring champion will put all three titles on the line in a bout with the undefeated Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 in front of a massive crowd at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Alvarez is hoping to take Saunders' WBO belt.

Attendance is expected to be in excess of 60,000 fans. The fight will be broadcast on DAZN. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones issued a statement voicing his excitement to host the highly anticipated bout:

“We are proud to host a boxing match of this magnitude as we welcome back Canelo Alvarez to AT&T Stadium to take on Billy Joe Saunders,” Jones said, via Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. “AT&T Stadium was built to house the greatest sporting events on the planet, and we feel we have another incredible boxing event on the horizon with this matchup taking place in Arlington on May 8th.”

Canelo Alvarez is more of a household name. But the undefeated Saunders is a two-weight champion with 14 knockout victories.

The venue might be even more notable than the bout itself.

Multiple combat sports arenas have targeted AT&T Stadium for big fights, including and especially the UFC. Conor McGregor had previously suggested his fight with Dustin Poirier should be held in Dallas.

The expectation is the Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders fight will be the largest sporting spectacle in the U.S. since the coronavirus pandemic shutdown last March.
