The Arizona Cardinals are expected to be one of the four finalists in the pursuit of Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency later this month. Prior to that, the front office has a major upcoming decision on their docket to make involving former Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Arizona has a pending situation on their hands Mathieu's concerning his contract with his $5.75 base salary this upcoming season and $8 million salary for 2019 expected to come into effect on March 14 along with $5 million bonus for this year being paid two days after that. This has created a level of uncertainty around his future with the franchise that the 25-year-old doesn't even know himself what will happen.

Since entering the league, Mathieu has been one of the most consistent defensive players for the Cardinals that has provided much stability in the secondary despite dealing with a pair of significant leg injuries. He is also coming off the year of his career where he was able to take the field in all 16 regular season games.

However, there hasn't exactly been the same level of performance from Mathieu in the last two years that has matched his 2015 Pro Bowl form. It has made the price tag for him over the next two seasons something that the Cardinals now have some hesitance to committing fully to paying at this time.

What may impact this decision could what unfolds with Cousins in the open market as the team is expected to be a serious suitor for his services. The team is likely leaning on getting a sense of what should unfold once he is a free agent as this would help in choosing whether to keep Mathieu on the roster. There is also the need to improve other areas of the team aside from quarterback such as the offensive line. It is progressively becoming a complicated situation that should have clarity before the start of free agency when his contract comes into effect.
