Despite being one of the top guards over the past few seasons, Isaiah Thomas has been labeled as a journeyman. He has jumped from team to team throughout the course of his career. He thought that he may have found a home with the Boston Celtics after leading them to a 53-29 record back in the 2016-2017 season.

Yet it seems like destiny has other plans for him. Thomas was involved in a blockbuster trade which sent him to the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. But after playing just 15 games with LeBron James and company, he was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers where he is now slowly returning back to form.

Come 2018, he will be an unrestricted free agent and is due for a max contract. At 28-years-old, Thomas is well within his prime years. He's familiar with the craziness that comes along with playing in the NBA: there's simply no guarantee.

His recent reply to a fan shows his awareness of this fact. Asked when he's considering of returning to Boston in the offseason, Thomas replied:

Critics believe that there's no chance for the Lakers point guard to garner a max contract. Per David Aldridge of NBA.com, an anonymous NBA executive weighed in on Thomas' situation:

“A lot of teams don't want small, ball-dominant point guards who are poor defenders. I think his market may be the mid-level in the new NBA economy, especially when the hip injury is factored in.”

Another was more positive and said:

“Depends how he finishes the year. Due to the tight market, would not surprise me to see him at $12-15M or could be as low as a mid-level deal if one of the space teams does not value him.”
