The Boston Celtics on Tuesday afternoon made the surprising decision to move point guard Isaiah Thomas to the Cleveland Cavaliers for fellow All-Star backcourt general Kyrie Irving.

It appears that the Celtics are extremely excited to have Irving on board as Kevin McHale revealed during an interview with SiriusXM NBA radio on Wednesday morning that general manager Danny Ainge has some high expectations for the 25-year-old.

Kyrie Irving has developed into one of the premier scorers in the league over the last few seasons and is coming off his best individual season where he averaged 25.2 points per game. He has an opportunity to take that to the next level this upcoming season as the top scoring option for the Celtics while also potentially becoming the next face of the franchise.

Although Boston isn't one of the landing spots that Irving had suggested, it does present him with the chance to carve out his own legacy as the leading superstar of a team that could compete for an NBA title. What makes this deal even more appealing to the Celtics is that the three-time All-Star has three years left on his five-year, $94.3 million deal that includes a player option worth $21.3 million for the 2019-20 season.

Ultimately, there is plenty of potential for this to become a long-term deal that could work out tremendously for both sides moving forward.
