Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is ready for the 2019-20 season, but the rugged defender did have one last comment on the 2018-19 Celtics team.
Smart admits the Celtics were “dysfunctional” last season. Boston was the preseason favorite to win the Eastern Conference, but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the playoffs in five games.
From Kyrie Irving's weird comments to the media to Jaylen Brown and Marcus Morris getting into it on the bench in Miami, the Celtics were just never able to get on the same page last season behind the scenes and it showed on the court.
The Celtics lost Kyrie Irving, Al Horford, Marcus Morris and Terry Rozier in free agency. Irving signed with the Brooklyn Nets, Horford signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, Morris signed with the New York Knicks and Rozier signed with the Charlotte Hornets.
Boston replaced Irving and Horford with Kemba Walker and Enes Kanter, respectively. Walker figures to get along with Celtics head coach Brad Stevens better than Irving did and connect with Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum off the court.
Marcus Smart is the heart and soul of the Celtics. Expect him to have a bigger leadership role next season with Irving and Horford gone.
