There's a belief that regression is inevitable for Patrick Mahomes. After all, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback put together one of the most dominant individual seasons of all time as a first-year starter in 2018, and the few signal-callers throughout league history who have come within striking distance of his statistical resume all experienced a downturn in numbers the following season. As opposing teams, coaches, and players prepare for the Chiefs going forward, they'll have game tape from last season to rely on, too, leading to better preparation than they were able to muster a year ago.

Not everyone, however, is convinced that the 23-year-old wunderkind is bound to regress this season. As NFL Network's Pete Schrager sees it, Mahomes is poised for another record-breaking season, potentially leading the Chiefs to the Super Bowl.

“You can't really solve Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid by watching a lot of film. This isn't some fluke offense. This isn't Chip Kelly with the spread,” he said on Monday's edition of The Herd. “This is a freak of nature who's got a bunch of stallions at wide receiver and a really good coach calling the plays. I don't think it's crazy to say that Mahomes throws for 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards again, and I don't think it's crazy to say [the Chiefs] are even better than the one seed they were last year and they go a step further.

“I'm all in on the Chiefs. I'm pushing all my chips in.”

Mahomes, the league's reigning MVP, threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while competing 66 percent of his passes, ridiculous numbers only previously reached by Peyton Manning in his historic 2013 campaign. He couldn't quite lead Kansas City back to the promised land, though, as the Chiefs fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots 38-31 in the AFC Championship game.
