Recently, ESPN aired the ‘Project 11' documentary, detailing Alex Smith's recovery from a gruesome leg injury he suffered in 2018. In response to the documentary, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs spoke about his relationship with Smith.
“Knowing the person and the attitude that he has, I can see that he has made so much more improvement because he has the mindset of going out there and being the best person he can be every single day. I’ve talked to him a couple times. I talked to him after the Super Bowl. He congratulated me and everything like that. He was one of the first text messages I got. That’s just the type of guy he is. I think he’s doing really well right now, and I can only imagine the progress he’s going to continue to make as he keeps getting after it every single day.”
Of course, before Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins in 2018, he was the starting quarterback of the Chiefs. As a matter of fact, he was actually the starter when Mahomes was drafted in 2017.
Therefore, Smith and Mahomes built a close relationship as they became teammates in Mahomes' rookie season. That relationship has held true, even with Smith dealing with his serious leg injury.
Without a doubt, Mahomes has been able to evolve into arguably the best quarterback in the NFL. But Andy Reid, the head coach of the Chiefs, doesn't believe he'd be where he is without Smith's tutelage. Given how much Smith helped him, Mahomes will always think highly of Smith.
