Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named NFL MVP and offensive player of the year on Saturday night.

In his second season (first as starter), Mahomes carried Kansas City to a 12-4 record, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns.

At only 23 years old, he promises his best days are still ahead.

“This is just the beginning,” Mahomes tweeted after receiving the honor.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was one of the first individuals who were sold on the young play initiator from the beginning. Reid traded up in the 2017 NFL Draft to select the Texas Tech quarterback with the No. 10 overall pick, passing on notable options such as cornerback Marshon Lattimore and quarterback Deshaun Watson.

“It was a great learning experience,” Reid told ESPN's Adam Teicher shortly after the Chiefs' season ended with a 37-31 overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. “I mentioned that during the season. I thought every game was a learning experience for him, something where he could get something out of the game and get better as a player. He's still got room to grow. He knows that. He'll work hard this offseason to do that.

Mahomes lit the league on fire from the get-go this year. In two games, he posted six touchdown passes and five more with four.

“What a great start he had, a nice foundation that he built. He got to see the magnitude of a game like (the AFC Championship), how it's a little bit faster than the game before, and that's the way it continues up through the Super Bowl.”

It would be plain foolish to suggest that this is the last time Patrick Mahomes will be in award contention.
