The Kansas City Chiefs have had to make some significant changes to the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Fortunately, it did not take much convincing to bring in safety Tyrann Mathieu.

The Chiefs have emerged as one of the most talented teams in the NFL and a legitimate championship contender moving forward. According to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star, that is what made it so easy for Mathieu to pick Kansas City as his next destination.

“I wanted to come to a team that had a great team, great talent, great core of players who are young. … it was a no brainer for me and my family.”

The reasoning behind Mathieu's decision certainly makes plenty of sense. The Chiefs had undergone some significant changes last offseason as well. Fortunately, their success in the 2018 campaign proved that it was for the better. It appears Kansas City has now become an attractive destination for free agents.

Mathieu will undoubtedly have some big shoes to fill in the secondary. The Chiefs also announced that they will be parting ways with safety Eric Berry this offseason. Despite his lack of playing time in recent years, he was still the unquestioned leader of the defense. They will now need Mathieu to step up into a similar role moving forward.

Mathieu spent the 2018 campaign with another budding contender in the Houston Texans. His versatile skill set should make him a seamless fit in the Chiefs defense. His presence should also help stabilize things over the top as Kansas City looks to fill the other voids on their roster.
