The Kansas City Chiefs season came to an end in their Sunday afternoon loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The AFC Championship Game ended in overtime, with a final score of 27-24.

Following the Chiefs' season finale, Tyrann Mathieu made it seem like that was his last hurrah in Kansas City. He tweeted a cryptic message Monday afternoon.

“I'm thankful and grateful. I leave with a grateful heart,” the safety tweeted. This led many to assume that Mathieu was moving on from Kansas City.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach addressed the tweet and said it “wasn't necessarily true” that the star safety was leaving. ESPN reporter Adam Teicher tweeted Veach's response Tuesday morning.

He spent the last three years in Kansas City on a three-year, $42 million contract. The contract, signed in March of 2019, included a $14.8 million signing bonus, $26.8 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $14,000,000, per Spotrac.

Regardless of whether or not his tweet meant anything, Mathieu's contract with the Chiefs expired at the end of the season. He is now an unrestricted free agent.

The free safety had another successful season with the Chiefs on and off the field. He recorded 76 tackles: 60 solo, 16 assisted, and two for loss. He also had one sack for 11 yards and six defended passes in the regular season. Mathieu had six tackles in two of the Chiefs' three post-season games.
