Just a couple of weeks ago, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 in large part due to Sammy Watkins. Despite his performances in the playoffs, Watkins is not expected to return to Kansas City next season.

Prior to the 2018 season, Watkins signed a three-year, $48 million contract with the Chiefs. In his first two seasons in Kansas City, Watkins has combined for only 92 receptions, 1,192 yards, and six touchdowns.

On the other hand, the former first-round pick was a vital member of Kansas City's offense this postseason. Over the course of the Chiefs' three playoff contests, Watkins recorded 14 receptions for 288 yards and a touchdown. Above all, the Clemson product hauled in five catches for 98 yards in the Super Bowl.

With Watkins in the offense, the Chiefs boast arguably the fastest receiving corps in the NFL. However, there's a business side to football and Watkins could be a cap casualty for Kansas City this offseason.

Next season, Watkins is slated to carry a cap hit of $21 million with the Chiefs (second-highest on the team). The $21 million cap hit that Watkins possesses is actually the highest among wide receivers in 2020.

Provided that, the Chiefs have to consider releasing the big-play receiver in exchange for more cap space in the offseason. By releasing Watkins, Kansas City can free up $14 million while also taking on a $7 million dead-cap penalty.

When free agency begins, the Chiefs are hoping to re-sign Chris Jones on the defensive side of the ball. For that to happen, Kansas City may have to part ways with a wide receiver that helped them win their first Super Bowl since 1969.
